The What and Why

Hello.

I’m a woman over fifty returning to work after a long absence. Like many women, it was to focus on raising my children. In my case, child as she is an only. I’m in the second half of my life and I’m hoping to make this half a lot better than the first.

I’ve done a lot of things so far: ran a successful print and web design business, gotten married (twice), gotten divorced (once), lived on both coasts of the United States, revisited my hometown for a while and am now happily relocated to the SouthEast. Nashville, to be exact. During all of that, I had a child, homeschooled that child (turns out she was highly gifted) and got back in touch with my first love, music and singing. My kiddo is also a big time musician-in-training so it’s kind of worked out.

That kiddo is getting ready to fly the coop, as children tend to do. And so I am looking at the landscape of my remaining years and seeing that there are changes that need to be made.

Specifically, I need to go back to work. I am fortunate that I like what I do (design and marketing.) So this does not feel like a forced requirement. Technically, however, it really is because as far as the future is concerned, I am not in the financial position I would like or need to be. From the research I’ve been doing lately, there are a lot of people in the same boat. Inflation has been killing the economy, wallets and bank accounts of many in the last few years, and there seem to be a lot of people who are very concerned about what their twilight years are going to look like. You can count me in that bucket.

Don’t get me started on whether any of us will actually collect Social Security after paying in all these years.

I made some super dumb financial moves in the last twenty years. Part of those dumb moves involved relying on anyone but myself to make sure I am financially secure. But I feel I have the will and the power to correct those, at least to some extent. Maybe to a great extent – that remains to be seen. I’m guess I’m going to die trying.

Fabulous Fifty Sisters is a state of mind that I hope to achieve

This blog is a chronical of my journey getting back into the workforce after a 15 year hiatus and getting the financial wrongs righted. I’m hoping I can enlighten and help others in my shoes by sharing what I’ve learned so far and what I’m going to be learning in the next few years. It’s also a chronical of the things I’ve learned along the way, things I’ve learned and would like to share with you. There’s a lot I’d like to talk about. Some of it will be about work, money and retirement, but you can expect to read about Health & Wellness, Travel, Fitness, Beauty and Fashion as well.

Because it’s really not all about money, at the end of day. I’m sure a lot of you have already figured that one out by now. And if you haven’t, maybe I can shed some light on money and the role it plays in your life.

I hope you’ll join me in the journey. And share what you’ve learned as well.
